If only "Sparks" flew at the Ad Club Awards...
When its the annual Chennai Ad Club Awards "Sparks 2005", one would definitely look forward to a great evening of excitement and creativity. But then it was a let down, like the staid Indian advertising which is probably going through one of its roughest patches of creativity.
The awards event was a classic reminder of the typical MBA class discussion - Does good advertising mean great creativity or does it refer to a great way to sell a product. Ads of brands which were hardly visible in the market walked away with awards. Hmmmmm quite debatable
Except for the concept of firemen walking on stage with the awards, there was nothing really hot about the whole event. Copywriter Senthil (never heard of him) and Mirchi Suchi were the MCs..ok can we avoid talking about their unworthy coordination and off the cuff remarks which hardly lacked any creativity, leave alone humour (btw Mirchi Suchi was in O&M earlier..knew it much before the awards event)
Sharad Haksar's two year old agency One Point Size bagged the Agency of the Year, Art Director and Copywriter of the Year Awards..virtually stealing the show. Guess thats a clear sign that creativity is completely sucked out ......
Incidentally Anantha who won the Best Copywriter Award is the son of BJP leader Jana Krishnamurthi..used to bump into him during quizzes when he was in Mudra..
